CATHEDRAL WEEK 1

Sacred Shores: Pilgrimage Across the Celtic North: In 2026, we continue the journey we began last summer, tracing ancient wells and living waters into new terrain. Guided by Dean Christopher Pappas and Dr. Neil Cockburn, our week draws pilgrims into the rugged beauty and spiritual imagination of the Celtic North—from the windswept stones of Iona to the tidal holy ground of Lindisfarne. Through daily prayer shaped by the rhythms of early monastic communities, rich storytelling, reflective teaching, and evocative musical textures, we will explore how pilgrimage forms the heart, deepens discipleship, and renews the Church’s life today. Anchored in tradition yet alive to the Spirit’s movement, this week invites participants to walk the ancient paths with fresh eyes and open hearts.

Worship Leaders

Worship Leaders: The Very Rev. Dr. Christopher Pappas (he/him) and Rev. Clare Morgan (they/them)

The Very Rev. Dr. Christopher A. Pappas (he/him) has been the Rector of Christ Church Cathedral and Dean of the Diocese of New Westminster since 2020. Prior to that, he was the Archdeacon for Congregational Development in the Anglican Diocese of Edmonton and Rector of Holy Trinity Anglican Church. Chris has served parishes in Rhode Island, Connecticut and Alberta. His focus is on leadership development and congregational growth. Chris is a strong proponent of ecumenism and interfaith activities and serves as the Padre of the  British Columbia Regiment. He is active in promoting the Arts, supporting those who have served in the military and in building a diverse community.

The Rev. Clare Morgan aka Cal (they/them) is an Anglican priest and musician living, working, and loving in stolen xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Skwxwú7mesh, and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ territory. They serve as pastor to the St. Brigid’s congregation at Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver, and priorix of the Sanctuary of the Arts contemplative community.

Music Leader: Dr. Neil Cockburn (he/him)

Neil is the organist and Director of Music of Christ Church Cathedral in Vancouver as of January 1, 2025. Prior he was Director of Chapel Music at the University of King’s College in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he directs the Chapel Choir in weekly services of Choral Evensong and Sung Eucharist, and the King’s Chorus in termly concerts of large-scale choral repertoire.

Originally from St. Andrews, Scotland, he has made Canada his home for the past 24 years, most of which he has spent making music just over the Rockies in Calgary, Alberta. While music is his primary passion, when not in the organ loft you may spot him on the curling rink.

The Christ Church Cathedral group will be hosting events during Week 1 including:

• Hymn Singing Tuesday at 2:30 pm
• Shuswap Cidery Co. for Theology on Tap Wednesday at 3:00 pm
• Conversation from Neil and Chris for the Public Speaker Series Wednesday at 7:15 pm
• Wine and Cheese followed by Compline (complete with candles) Wednesday at 8:30 pm
• Margaret Falls (two hikes to choose from) followed by monster ice cream cones at Tappen Co-op Thursday at 2:30 pm

Worship Leader Rev. Martin Elfert Week 2

Bio: I started going to church shortly after our son, Ami, was born. Church hadn’t been part of my life growing up in Vancouver, BC. But the experience of being present for Ami’s arrival into the world changed something for me. The Celts speak of “thin places,” of physical locations – like Sorrento – in which God is particularly close at hand; Ami’s birth was a thin experience, an occasion on which something loving and beautiful and awesome and beyond words filled up the room.

Afterwards, I realized that I wanted – that I needed – a community and a set of practices within which to respond to that experience. I found these things in Christianity, in Anglicanism in particular, and even more specifically at Sorrento Centre. Sorrento has been our “summer cabin” ever since. My family and I are so glad that we get to share that cabin with you.

These days I serve as Rector of Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Portland, Oregon (the place that k.d. lang has called “the most Canadian city in America”). I also serve on the Sorrento Board of Directors. I’m so looking forward to coming home to Sorrento and worshipping with you this summer! Together, we’ll continue Sorrento’s long history of worship: liturgy that is deeply rooted in tradition while also finding new ways to make new the great stories of scripture, of faith, and of our very lives. Music Leaders: Shannon and Tyson Kerr

Shannon and Tyson Kerr have led music for Sorrento Centre summer worship services starting in 2013 with the 50th anniversary of the Centre. Shannon has been a lifelong attendee of Sorrento Centre; both Shannon and Tyson have treasured Sorrento Centre as a place of spiritual renewal for many years. Tyson is a church musician and educator through St. Paul’s United Church, and Shannon is a speech pathologist and voice specialist in Edmonton. They look forward to sharing their music with you this summer!

Worship & Music Leaders: Rev. David Taylor and Rev. Andrew Halladay

David is the Rector of the Parish of St. Mark – Ocean Park. He is a composer of worship music and liturgy and a long-time lover of Sorrento Centre.

Andrew is the Vicar at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Langley, BC. He has a passion for liturgy, music, and the Sorrento Centre, especially for thinking of ways to get children and young people involved. Andrew is an amateur actor and singer and loves musical theatre.

Worship Leader: Rev. Cameron Gutjahr

Cameron is a priest in the Anglican Diocese of New Westminster at St. John the Divine, Squamish. He loves to play his ukulele with the weekly play group, on Sunday mornings, really anytime he can. He loves fungi, working with young people, and the works of Madeleine L’Engle. 

Music Leader: Jessica Steele

Jessica has been immersed in music her whole life, playing piano and singing in choirs. She now serves as one of the accompanists for St. John the Divine, Squamish and the Sea to Sky Singers. Jessica works in marine restoration with SeaChange Marine Conservation Society and loves swimming, hiking, and birding!
