A ‘pause’ for our good health

Cancelling / postponing all events on campus and farm

This article was published on March 10, 2020, during the pandemic.

The Sorrento Centre has cancelled or postponed all events on our main campus and natural farm to the end of May, 2020. We are following the directions of public health authorities and working with event organizers to assess events in June and following.

On March 18, 2020 British Columbia declared a public health emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier, BC Medical Officer of Health Dr Bonnie Henry ordered events over 50 people to be cancelled. We are using a risk assessment tool developed by the Public Health Agency of Canada, along with public health officials and event organizers, to assess events in June and following.

The ‘pause’ as we monitor the dynamic situation and respond to directions from health officials is an opportunity for us to invest in our buildings and lands, as well as strengthen our operations (farm, youth, grounds, booking, office, program). The work we are planning will meet or exceed public health rules including social distancing.

We are always looking for ways to be good neighbours in the South Shuswap and the surrounding region. We have already started to deliver food from our kitchen to nearby groups. Our staff are volunteering to help those in our community who are isolated or otherwise need practical assistance.

We aspire to ensure the highest possible health, safety and well-being of our guests and staff. We follow the directions of public health authorities, including the BC Medical Officer of Health, BC Centre for Disease Control, Public Health Agency of Canada and the World Health Organization.

We have implemented a five-part pandemic preparedness plan. You can download more information below.

We listen and engage with public health authorities, our guests, client groups, staff, our key volunteers, our neighbours and our colleagues who manage retreat, conference and wellness centres. We exchange information. We are committed to continuous improvement.
