Colour, colour, colour

with Catherine Nicholls

Colour, colour, colour: October 2-7, 2022

$400 plus accommodation and (optional) meals

How does colour work? What makes colour “move”? And how does colour make you feel? In this 4 day in-depth workshop we will be exploring a few simple colour “rules”, experimenting with colour combinations and exploring some of the wonderful “what-ifs” of colour and design. We will be playing with found and painted papers and using some simple exercises to create our own designs. As well as creating personal colour families and combining colour in unexpected ways! Using simple techniques we will be applying our ideas to fabric. This is an ideal opportunity to explore simple shapes and colours you may have “avoided” till now!

Time spent working with colour will give you the confidence to create, select and use colour in your designs in a whole new way, with the added bonus of designing your own original artwork. Students are welcome to approach this workshop as a series of samples and explorations or work with intention towards a goal. But you never know, samples often have a way of coming together to create a unique textile masterpiece.

Bio: Quilt- Embroidery-Mixed Media-Painting-Art Cloth-Drawing-Stitch

Catherine lives and works in Gibsons, B.C. and draws inspiration from the natural world, her travels and the people she meets along the way. Stories, legends and the history of people, place and culture are the creative raw materials for themed exhibitions worldwide.

Catherine’s work is developed through painting, drawing and collage in sketchbooks. This careful planning and exploration of ideas allows a more liberated and intuitive approach when it comes to fabric, paint and mixed media techniques. She works on paper and fabric with discharge, dyeing, drawing, painting and printing. Textile pieces are then densely quilted either by hand or machine and often both. The traditional embellishments of buttons are a common feature, as are more innovative concepts on fabric like paint or pen and ink.

Catherine has exhibited in North America and Europe individually and as a member of SiX and is one third of thr3fold journal, “the journal of creative vision” and various pieces tour Europe on an ongoing basis. Teaching forms part of her daily life, with workshops in locations around the world, she also offers “ local” workshops in patchwork and quilting techniques, sketchbooks and journaling, life drawing, design and other passions.
