    Samara Sonmor

Samara Sonmor is a community counsellor living in the Shuswap. Her interest is building food resilient communities from the ground up. Samara believes strong food systems shape strong communities. And vice versa! As the chair of the newly organized Food Action Society of BC, she hopes to work on food programming with BC community groups. The Society was originally created to be an umbrella organization for food programs and worked primarily in the North Okanagan. Samara was the executive director of Food Action for three years, until early 2020 and COVID. The Society became dormant during that time. Now it’s growing in a new direction.
Samara is an avid gardener and has diverse experience designing and managing community food programs for all ages. Food Action previously managed three community gardens and an experimental farm in Vernon, and Samara delivered many gardening and cooking workshops with the Society. She also manages Sage Coyote Farm in the Shuswap. Samara is trained in sustainable community development and group counselling. She has a Bachelor of General Studies (TRU), a Certificate of Sustainable Community Development (SFU), and a Diploma in Counselling Psychology (KCPC).

Community Garden Project – FREE Seminar – Cultivating Change: Nourishing Food Resilient Communities

Please register to attend with our Associate Director, Kathie MacDuff, via email, at kathie@sorrentocentre.ca.

Sorrento Retreat and Conference Centre has taken the first steps towards organizing a Community Garden Project starting with an exciting FREE Seminar, Cultivating Change: Nourishing Food Resilient Communities!

Keeping with our 2024 theme NOURISH, our FREE SEMINAR will be located in our Caritas Conference room on Friday, February 16; doors open at 6pm, the seminar will begin at 6:30pm, ending at 8pm. Refreshments will be offered, and donations happily accepted. There’s plenty of free parking. Everyone is invited to attend. Please pass this information on to anyone you think maybe interested.

Samara Sonmor, the current chair of the newly organized Food Action Society of BC will be our guest speaker. Samara has overseen community gardens in Vernon, presented tons of workshops to community and school groups, and worked with non-profits, church, indigenous groups, and other organizations wanting to initiate community gardens. Samara will define food security/insecurity and discuss a new way of looking at the problem through Food Resilience. Samara will deliver practical ways people (and communities) can increase their food resilience – small actions can have big impacts! Community gardens are an important piece of food resilience in communities and Samara will describe their role and different configurations.

We are thrilled to partner with Food Action on this project!

The Sorrento Retreat and Conference Centre Farm has the space and the vision to create a Community Garden and hopes to engage community partnerships. We are accepting expressions of interest from local residents who may want to lease a bed ($15 for the season, a limit of two per person/family). Please submit your interest via email to kathie@sorrentocentre.ca

Depending on the success of this first seminar, others will be offered including:

  1. How to build a raised bed
  2. How to fill and plant a raised bed
  3. The benefits of irrigation
  4. The joy of microgreens

Eventually, we hope to offer seminars on food preparation, seed saving, and canning.
