- Karen Gummo - Biography
A poet, dancer, and visual artist, Karen Gummo has been performing as a storyteller for almost 40 years in schools, libraries, museums, churches, seniors’ lodges, and in the fields and forests. She has traveled across Canada and as far as Iceland to share her favourite invented and real family and historical sagas, along with myths, folklore, and legends. Her Scandinavian family background and love for flora and fauna are her anchors. She continues to explore the depths of that rich heritage through research, through dreaming, offering workshops and through performance. She is co-founder of Storytelling Alberta formerly known as TALES Calgary and author/ illustrator of a wee prairie book called Ladybird Fly.
Now back to the drawing board, Karen is working on a series of Coyote drawings to bring life to a new picture book based on a story that she created and honed in school performances and residencies. They are in the works just around the corner. Karen is immersed as well in researching and presenting the story of an Icelandic Canadian writer Laura Goodman Salverson who launched her career as a novelist in Calgary 100 years ago. Thus far she has presented the full piece at the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts and at the opening of the EDDA Saga Museum in Reykjavik, Iceland.
