Fairness, Decency, Diversity, Love, Inclusion, and Justice
In these times…
Sorrento Centre uses our economic and social impact to support and build up people and communities. Our staff, our work in welcoming thousands of guests annually and our commitment as a community hub for our neighbours in the South Shuswap adds up to a multi-million dollar economic and social benefit for our rural region. Our values, drawn from the Anglican tradition and Christian faith, lead us to respect and value the dignity of all people, all the beautiful world around us and the Divine.
As governments seek to weaponize economic and social policies to target individuals, divide us with fear and hatred and exclude some, we at Sorrento Centre will continue to use our economic and social impact as a force for good in this world that seems to embrace cruelty and targets those who are poor and marginalized due to social, gender, religious, national and other identities.
We stand for fairness, decency, diversity, love, inclusion and justice. We will:
- use our financial and social means to invest in enterprises, with a preference for local and Canadian businesses that share our commitment to fairness and justice. Our purchasing reflects our values.
- continue to generously welcome a diversity of guests, encouraging neighbourliness and friendliness. As much as we are able, we will offer financial and other practical supports to our guests.
- affirm our commitment to a living wage for staff. As much as we are able, our wages and working conditions reflect our commitment to the dignity and value of our employees.
- seek to re-enchant a world disenchanted and divided by fear and hatred. Enchantment is our theme for 2025 and we seek to awaken wonder, awe, joy and love in these lives.
Radical love is an ancient calling. It is not always clear, nor is it always easy, to practice radical love in a time when hatred and fear are nurtured. We will do our part, and invite our staff, our guests and our neighbours near and far to join us. We will partner with people and groups locally, nationally and internationally and collaborate with those who share this practical vision of justice and love.
We gratefully acknowledge that we live, work, play and pray in Secwepemcúĺecw, the traditional and unceded land of the Secwepemc people, and we honour the First Peoples. The Secwepemc people have sought to live with harmony and generosity, and those are values that we seek to live into today.
Please help us to live more deeply into these values of peace, justice and love. Please let me know your ideas and suggestions. We are always listening and learning, even as we seek to act.
In gratitude,
The Rev’d Michael Shapcott, Executive Director
