Honouring the children
With a memorial at St Mary’s Anglican / United Church in Sorrento
A small group from St Mary’s Anglican / United Church gathered outdoors at the Sorrento Centre on June 8 to cut pieces of orange cloth and create a vibrant memorial to the 215 children whose unmarked graves have been discovered at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. After preparing the ribbons to honour each of the children, the group moved across the highway from Sorrento Centre to St Mary’s to hang the ribbons on the railings of the church. The members of Sorrento Anglican / United, as well as the Sorrento Centre, are horrified and heartbroken at the news of the discovery of the graves. Both are committed to solidarity and support for the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc as they continue in their investigation to uncover the full truth of the terrible loss.
St Mary’s and the Sorrento Centre are in Secwépemc’ulucw, the traditional, unceded territory of Secwepemc people, who have lived on this land since time immemorial and have practiced virtues of harmony and generosity.
