‘Light in our future’ – BC vaccination team announced

Prudent plans for 2021 for the Sorrento Centre

This article was published on Nov. 25, 2020, during the pandemic.

“There is a light in our future” says BC’s top health official, Dr Bonnie Henry.

When will the Sorrento Centre be able to welcome day visitors and overnight guests to our main campus and natural farm? How long will the total lockdown of British Columbia (including our South Shuswap region) which started last week as the second wave of COVID-19 came crashing down on us last into the new year?

For the health and well-being of our guests, staff and neighbours, the Sorrento Centre was forced to postpone or cancel dozens of large and small events in 2020 – everything from Nimblefingers banjo festival to Harambee to SOYA yoga academy, plus bicycling and quilting and many other events. While we did manage a “safe, slow and small” gradual re-opening (until the latest restrictions were imposed), we had to cancel the registrations of thousands of guests.

The Sorrento Centre is closely following the directions of BC Medical Officer of Health Dr Bonnie Henry, as well as detailed guidelines from WorkSafeBC and other public health rules and guidelines. We are encouraged to note that BC has formed a COVID-19 vaccination team that could begin work in January. Of course, it will take some time for widespread vaccination – and for public health officials to ease the pandemic restrictions.

We have started prudent and safe planning for a number of events and activities in 2021, especially the late spring and into the summer and fall. We plan to offer a calendar of prospective events by mid-December so that guests can hold the dates and make their plans for 2021.

Our commitment is to meet and exceed WorkSafeBC and public health rules. That means, at the moment, that we are locked down on our main campus and natural farm. It means that we are carefully monitoring the developments as the public health emergency continues to unfold into December. And it also means that as the new year approaches, we will carefully assess each event and activity to ensure that they are safe and healthy.

We are planning for a vibrant 2021. Look for details in the coming weeks.
