Neskonlith knowledge holder Gerry Thomas
Stories and wisdom from the Secwépemc culture
On August 5th 2022, Neskonlith knowledge holder Gerry Thomas brought us stories and wisdom from the Secwepemc culture, and encouraged guests to have a “hands-on” experience.
Gerry, son of the late Dr. Mary Thomas, shared stories of his childhood, his favourite memories with his family, and the wisdom he learned throughout his life. At Gerry’s presentation, guests were able to hold, touch, and feel indigenous artwork such as hand-made beaded belts, hand-woven baskets passed down from generations, and animal skin headpieces made by Dr. Mary Thomas herself.
You may have already seen former executive director, Ken Genge, wearing the bear hide from our Facebook page!
The experience left many people amazed especially at how Gerry spoke so passionately about his traditions and culture. We hope to have more indigenous elders and knowledge keepers from around the Shuswap come to share more of their stories, their beautiful craftsmanship, and their vast wisdom of the land with us.
