Next Year, Same Place

A Study in Textile Art presented by Gallery Vertigo

“Next Year, Same Place” is a group exhibit showcasing 10 years of study. The participating artists are current and former students of internationally renowned fibre artist, Catherine Nicholls, who have been joining her each October at the Sorrento Retreat and Conference Centre in Sorrento, BC. These works represent the many themes and processes Catherine has shared with them over the years.

Artist Statement
This group exhibit entitled “Next Year, Same Place” is a visual celebration of the decade that these participating artists have been studying, inspiring and supporting each other.
The work created is textile-based, reflecting the myriad of processes and themes presented and taught by Catherine Nicholls over the many sessions held at the Sorrento Retreat and Conference Cente in Sorrento, BC.
A common thread throughout Catherine’s classes is creating through design and experimentation followed by execution and resolution. Catherine works with each student to support them in developing their own unique textile pieces and provides them with the knowledge to advance their art practice.
Processes represented in the exhibition pieces include fibre-reactive dyeing, eco-dyeing and printing, Shibori, fabric painting and manipulation, silk screening, block and mono-printing, stenciling, resist, rusting, scraping, hand-stitching and embroidery.
We hope that the work presented here is a reflection of all that Catherine has taught us.
