Salute to the Sockeye
An experience of a lifetime
Have you heard about the “Salute to the Sockeye”? The first time you hear those words, you may be confused – but come take a look and find out why you will want to be part of this incredible event that happens once every four years.
The Adams River is an important waterway in our area. The Secwépemc people have lived and loved on this land, rich with wildlife and bountiful vegetation, since time immemorial. If you walk carefully you may find the remains of pit houses. The area is also a popular destination for thrill-seeking white-water rafters and fishers of trout and whitefish while hikers and bikers love the extensive trail system.
Just spending time in the Shuswap and along Adams River is an invitation to fall back in love with mother nature.
So what’s all this about fish???
Every fall, the typically calm waters of the Adams River turn red as sockeye salmon ‘run’ upstream, back to their birthplaces to spawn. And on a dominant year (like 2022), the Adams River Salmon Society, predicts 7 to 14 million salmon will return to B.C. river systems from the ocean this year. It is a sight to behold.
Just down the road from Sorrento Centre is the beautiful Tsútswecw Provincial Park (formerly, Roderick Haig-Brown) where you can take part in the Salute to the Sockeye – the largest Sockeye Salmon run in North America. Millions of fish can easily be observed as they make the long journey home. This three-week long event, runs from September 30th until October 23, 2022.
This autumn is the perfect time for you and your family to witness this impressive natural display. It is breathtaking.
