Welcome to Harambee

Harambee began in 1996, when two families raising children of African heritage came together around a campfire — sharing stories, laughter, and a deep desire for connection. From those humble beginnings, a vibrant and growing community was born.

Today, we proudly support all children of African heritage from across the country and continent — regardless of family type (biological, adoptive, or foster) — through our flagship event, the Harambee Summer Festival, and year-round educational programming.

At the heart of our work is a shared commitment to children’s joy, identity, and connection — celebrating Black culture and empowering families through meaningful, shared experience.

The week-long summer festival provides a joyful, culturally rooted, and safe space where children and families can explore identity together, build lasting friendships, and grow as a community.

Important Details

New to Harambee?
Visit the Harambee Cultural Society website to find out what to expect at your first Festival — everything you need to know before you arrive! Whether this is your first time, come and participate in a multi-day immersion experience unlike anything you will find in your home communities. We have families from all over, including many parts of British Columbia, Alberta, Washington state and even Eastern Canada.

Early Planning Deposit: A $100 deposit is due in January to confirm your intent to attend.
Families who pay by January 30 will receive first access to campsite reservations.
This deposit will be applied toward your final Harambee program fee.

Registration & Accommodation:
All registration and lodging are managed directly through Sorrento Retreat and Conference Centre.
